Well it does not start for a couple of days, but already we have some interesting Info. EA To Launch Digital Download Service; TOR Exclusive Online Distribution GameSpot is reporting on an article published today in the Wall Street Journal that Electronic Arts is prepping an online download service similar to Steam, and that this service will be the exclusive online resource for purchasing Star Wars: The Old Republic: The Wall Street Journal reports the megapublisher is readying a Steam-like online store to sell 150+ games directly and offer social networking; will be sole online seller of Star Wars: The Old Republic. This may mean that EA Will pull all their Content from Steam, so COD, Battlefield 3, etc
I hope it fails. Not much in this world I hate more than EA games. They have taken over and destroyed way too many brilliant studios and titles.
So they are going to revamp their already existing downloading plateform or release a new one, i'm confused. I guess this is a new one. Retail Battlefield 2 with addons is still a pain to install/update with manual patches etc so in that sense its a good move. I guess they have BF3 DLCs in mind too on top of SWTOR.
its not a good move simply because steam is already the pc gamer platform of choice, so it's a mistake to force people to have yet another service... Same mistake Microsoft made with games for windows live... They should just admit defeat and join efforts with valve instead of trying to compete... unfortunately thats not how the business works
well steam is so god damn expencive i like sites like gamesplanet.com wich has its own downloader and its alot cheaper to buy the games
Its supposed to replace the current EA downloader according to reports. A response was posted on the official forums within minutes of the report going online. http://darthhater.com/2011/06/03/wsj-reports-swtor-exclusive-to-new-ea-download-service/ The way it reads implies that ToR will be exclusive to it in terms of downloading, not sure what it means in terms of existing titles that are on Steam etc.
As much as I want it to succeed... Activision killed pc CoD by forcing the PC dedicated devs out of IW, EA are close to Activision on the Nazi list and it would not surprise me if they found a way to stifle the PC love from DICE. DICE genuinely believe that PC is the platform which advances the game industry the most, there was a quote I found somewhere that a DICE dev said that consoles slow the advance of the game industry which the PC platform pushes. But EA et al. want the industry to slow down so they can milk the current IPs for less cost and greater profit. BF3 could swing either way for me. I hope it is everything I expect from DICE and fear it will be what I expect from EA.
thats more due to the xbox kiddies ruining it as they cant afford a pc ofc the console gonna be a easier way to play sadly its gonna keep going that way as long as the xbox fanbois exist
Something related to SW:ToR - advanced classes interview. http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/367/feature/5273/Advanced-Classes-Interview.html/page/1 Something else: http://www.swtor.com/info/systems/advanced-classes
Seriously if I have to install some EA steam rip off shite in my pc to play a fucken game I gonna buy a sniper rifle and start popping these fucks off.... so I want a computer game shopping complex installed on my pc do I fuck,,, GTFO fucken bollox. Vote : go to game website, enter payment, download and play game. Job done, everything else is just fucked up bullshit kk ...rant off... cunts...
Pointless crap is pointless. Except for them of course, they'll grab some more money out of it one way or another.
It's a fantastic move on EA's part, they'll save themselves from losing the 30% margin they currently do on purchases of their games from steam etc. Especially for subscription/dlc based games. Sent using my Fruit!
But its not. Games for Windows Live is essentially the same idea as what EA are proposing and that was a huge sack of fail. On paper it looks good, in reality it will cost a load to implement and will piss of a lot of people and potentially lose out on business because people will not buy games that require it. Think of Dawn of War on Games for Windows Live, it dropped the GFWL integration for DoW2 because it was fail.
Steam is a good implementation of digital distribution, GFWL is an utter abysmal effort engineered by the finest computing dolphins the seas can offer. We'll see where EA lands up, but given their track record lately I'd bet on the GWFL side of things.
While it may piss a handful of people off, it will still do well and like I said they make more money as they are distributing themselves. This is a crucial step as we move closer and closer to a completely box-less game market! Sent using my Fruit!
And still paying the same price of full boxed games with manuals, maps and other kinky stuff. Something is wrong.
