I am up for us getting a minecraft server back up and running and I am willing to help with the cost. However, if I am paying some amount of money then find out that I cant log in because the server is full I would be a bit pissed off. This is why I think we should leave a thread up for a few days, see who is interested, buy a suitable size server then whitelist it so only paying users can use it. These are rough prices of servers from Multiplay. 10 players server on a one year deal - £90 (£9 per person) 12 players server on a one year deal - £108 (£9 per person) 14 players server on a one year deal - £126 (£9 per person) 16 players server on a one year deal - £135 (£8.44 per person) 18 players server on a one year deal - £234 (£13 per person) 20 players server on a one year deal - £252 (£12.60 per person) If we do get this up and running and it is whitelisted, then I would agree no mods on the server other than the admin mods just to keep everything in order. None of the economy mods or town mods, just the admin stuff. Personally I would pay no more than £10, so depending on how many people we get I would be happy to put money in and buy a 10/12/14/16 man server. I think 10 will more than likely be enough, but price is same on 12 and 14 so if we have enough people putting money in, then it's still doable. Oh, and if anyone wants to know why we just don't host one ourselves..... Minecraft rapes server due to it whoring RAM. List of People who will pay. Sure why not, been playing a lot of single player with only yogbox which isn't many mods so will be fun to have a server again.
Of course i will put a tenner in. These are probably the best deals on servers, had a look around and a lot are way more expensive.
If you're not interested in buying one, and can stand me managing the migration from one version to the other (something Bukkit/multiplay will always be so infinitely much better at) I will most likely have both the bandwidth and the "hardware" to run a minecraftserver along my normal one, and it should be mostly without hiccups. I both have experience and great help regarding the maintaining (one of my best bros made Skinedit), and none of you should have bad lag to sweden. The negative part is that I can only truly get started in late august (at best) as I'm away from home right now. This is an alternative if you don't want to pay for it, but it obviously lacks some of the functionality of one from Bukkit/Multiplay/whatever. Thankfully it does not have a player limit, and well, cheapskates galore. Any interest?
We could always get the server for say 3 months from Multiplay and that gives you time to set up etc etc also makes it cheaper too so, just another thought
What sort of monster are you building if you will be able to host a minecraft server ? I read them and thought it wasn't so bad, 500Mb RAM, 1Gb disk space 1 core processor.... then I read that one guy had ten people on his server and they went exploring for a few hours...... map size expanded so much that minecraft was using 4Gb RAM, maxing all 4 cores of the server and had stored Gb's of data on the disk. I only wonder if it gets worse the more you explore ? Added you to the list also Mask. ^^
I'm sitting on scraps right now and am not sure I can plunge out any money. Never heard any horror stories like that. Besides, all ram-intensive data is stored client-side afaik? Oh well, we've never had issues on far shittier hardware than I'm running.
Minecraft servers are pretty high usage indeed. It's mostly RAM that you need, but RAM is pretty cheap nowadays. I was pretty surprised by the requirements as I had set it up on the BOON server and had to turn it off pretty quickly.
@Katiechops - you want in on this so your son can play on our server? Sent from my HTC Desire using Forum Runner
If you're short on cash by like 1 person I'll pay for it. I'll never play but I guess my cousin might.
Added KC's son to the list. Will let this thread run till the end of this week then we will think about buying, so anyone who wants in, say so now or forever be not on the whitelist. EDIT: @Fizzee - your brother wanting in on this or does he play elsewhere or no longer play.
I'll half what Tal is paying, I won't play it either probably but it might be something to do if I end up bored (unlikely after steam summer sale).
Anyone else wanting in on this ? @Fizzee - your brother want in or not ? I think we should order tonight/tomorrow. I vote everyone paypals Adagio and he can deal with Multiplay as I cba.
