I think my old q6600? Is starting to show its age and letting the rest of my system down. Im thinking my ssd and ATI 5850 are solid enough so it will be a change over to i5-2500k processor. I have always gone asus mobos the last being a republic gamer one but thinking maybe its time for a change.

So in all I need a mobo, processor and 8gig? Memory. it will mainly be used as a games machine and films on a 32 inch led tv. the games on a dell 22 inch e-ips monitor if that helps.

Just dont buy what shanto bought and you'll be ok:p.What other hardware have you got that will work with your new mobo/proc/mem? like PSU etc.

Memory: I'd pick some Corsair Dominator sticks of 1600mhz since they're pretty reliable
Motherboard: For the mobo, I'd stay away from MSI in my opinion. Then you have Asus P8P67 Pro or the Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4. Or you could go for this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138298

And the processors, well you already picked the one you want I guess. You aren't waiting for the AMD bulldozer CPU's i guess?

Doing this off memory as I am at work. The psu is somthing like a corsair **82. Only other items will be a Intel ssd and 2 hdd. One for games the other for films porn tv shows porn programs and smurf porn.

Well aslong as you know the power consumption won't get close to what your PSU can handle you should be fine, they age the longer you use them and adding newer hardware that's a little more powerhungry may stress things. However I'm not really sure how a q6600 compares to a 2500k i5.

Asus maximus IV extreme and an i7 2600k and overclock to 5.0 with relative ease. Also 1155 chips are pretty low on power munching.

I'm saving to get a machine in October to upgrade from Q6600 OCd to 3.2 and so far the build I've looked at is

    i7 2600k 3.4
    Asus sabretooth (don't need a 5.0 OC)
    6GB corsair XMS3
    Corsair 750W modular PSU
    1TB barracuda
    Another 5870 to crossfire
    Arctic 7 cooler

Should clock to 4.0 with ease and destroy BF3 which is my target ATM.

Going to be a ground up build with only my 5870 surviving to the new machine. Don't buy now though, the new ivy bridge and bulldozers come out in q4 and will force down the i7 prices!

The processor prices arent really the problem atm, its the motherboards and lack of them really.. Hopefully AMD will get some ground back with those Bulldozer's.

Adagio, how much are you wanting to spend ?

Remember, if you say a number less than £750 your officially a homo.

they are fine price wise, but they will be better when the new chips get released for obvious reasons. Or even get a bulldozer/ivy bridge if you can afford it. No point upgrading now as you will have best of both worlds in just a few months in being able to get a better chip or the same one you want now for cheaper.

For just a Proc, a Mobo and Ram, if you pay over £750 you are a fucktard.

I would never buy the latest chips, especially when they are just released, as the pricing on them is shocking.

I bought an i7 920 just when the 930 and 950 was released and the price dropped about £100 overnight and the chip has been flawless.

Yup, that's why my build will happen in october when I have saved about a grand and the ivy bridge/ buldozers are due out.

the i7 2600k is vastly superior to the i5 2500k in terms of hyperthreading which will start being supported by games in the next 9-12 months which will make the i7 have far more staying power than the i5, and for not much more. Worth thinking about.

yea its nice having 8 cores showing in your task manager, even though its quite pointless :p. My PC never ever uses HT though :(

Not now, but give it a year and everyone who bought an i5 will be upgrading and you will be seeing a speed boost without paying a penny

I'm looking at £400 for the Processor, mobo and ram.

Ouch.... then save up. Honestly, I would struggle to make a decent i5 rig on £400... and i5 would be a bad investment at this point in time as I pointed out above,

When the i5 feels as old as your q6600 is starting to feel (I know as I have one... it's still a great quad, but for newer games it's starting to get sluggish on top settings) you would be wishing you had saved an extra £80 for the i7 2600k as it will far outlast the i5.

Hyperthreading may be useless atm, and a lot of the older i7 buyers probably question why they didn't get the i5, so close to hyperthreading games, i5s would be a bad choice over an i7 imho. once hyperthreading gets put into a game an i7 would feel like a brand new chip with a huge performance boost over the i5 (i think it's something like 30%)

Please tell me if i'm talking BS, but you would be doing yourself a misfortune to upgrade now, and an even bigger one to get an i5 over an i7

In the short term... but in the long term you will have to upgrade far sooner and so cost you more.

Also just been looking around and the new sandy bridge 2011 chips are due fo a Q3 release which is only 2 months away....

Can you please give me the source of your claim that HT will increase FPS in games? because I don't think it will be such a big deal at all, however feel free to prove me wrong.
