I'm moving in with my fiancée on the 29th but need to find a good ISP with cheap Internet as money is a bit tight.

What providers and offers would you recommend. The house is in Woodley, (Reading) south east England.

Needs to be cheap, reliable and stable.
Speed can be <10 mb, and have no or very high caps

It will be used for gaming primarily but streaming tv, porn and downloading games (d2d) And torrents.

I need a new ISP as well,I am at present with TalkTalk and they are terraBad dont go near them every time you ring to complain you end up with a new contract whether you or they mentioned it or not I was with Tiscali but talk talk took over and ever since they have been a Mare!! BT look good but the unlimited package is pretty expensive I think they all have bad points tbh,I think Plusnet are ok not sure about what download limits they have though not so good for downloading tons of Porn and torrents but no contract which is always good,I'm gonna have to look into it soon though as I am not paying TalkTalk atm and they are gonna cut me off soon, trying to get out of contract before I switch,
O GZ on the Mrs thing!

I'm with Be internet. The service from them is alright, the speed in my area is crap but it's no fault of theirs, and I receive slightly better speed with them than I do from all the other ISP's. I torrent tons of films and tv shows and they've never even acknowledged it.

They use the BT cable so it's basically exactly the same service as any other ISP that uses Bt cables.

Something worth mentioning - If the porn is important to you (it sure is for me), then you need to opt in when starting a new service with BT, Talktalk, virgin and someone else (not BE), otherwise they auto-block all porn. And it's difficult to work around a server side block. I'd have no issue calling them and opting in, i'd probably enjoy it, but I dunno if it would bother you.

I'd ring em up and say "why can't I watch wet writhing busty blondes fuck each other with giant dildos?!"
That'd get the problem fixed quickly!

Go with BE. Been with them for ages, had no problems (or complains from them).

If your exchange is enabled with BE LLU, they only use the 'last mile' of cable to get to your house - they have their own equipment in the exchange so you won't be using BT's. If you can get BT infinity though, I'd probably go with that.

Bt infinity is a bit out of our budget tbh. Maybe one day.

    Then go for BE! :)

Ended up going with BT and its the Fastest connection I've ever had in UK but they strangle your Torrent downloading between certain times and w/e peak times really has anyone got any software which sidesteps that

If you're serious about beating it and are pretty hardcore about downloading, the best way is to rent server space in somewhere in europe and set that up to torrent for you, then just FTP directly from there. They can't tell what you're downloading and won't limit this type of traffic.

Alternatives are using something like Torrentprivacy or one of the less effective free versions, they'll stop BT detecting that it's a torrent program using the bandwidth, however if it's a direct bandwidth cap they provide based on usage during peak hours, then there's no way of preventing that.

That.. or you can just simply encrypt your torrents with SSL. Most clients already provide the option. It's a bit slower than unencrypted connection but still faster than the ISP choke. Also, some ISPs in Europe also do torrent shaping. I wouldn't recommend the server space/FTP option (would be expensive).

SSL built into torrent clients just doesn't work. server space is relatively cheap now, could get a good deal for like 10-20 euro a month.

i live in norway and as such, I have no idea!
if we got limits or throttles, there would be a public outcry and people would get publicly hanged.
just dont EVER get anything with a limit even if its decently high, that is all

Its deffo strangled its goes from 1.6mb to around 25kbs bang on 5pm and lifts bang on 12pm i remember Chops having a problem with a game and BT think it was Rift and he used some program to bounce his ip around so that his connection was not fooked (not very technical I know:p) thats the sort of thing I'm after dont wanna go renting space out and spending reams of cash although thx for the input i have a so called unlimited download option so as far as I am concerned i should be able to download what I like and as much as I like, whenever it suits me,the fact that most of the stuff i download is illegal though doesn't give much weight to my argument with BT,tbh its not that much of a big deal atm if I need something i just dl it through the night I am just worried that I may run into the same problems as chops playing MMos not yet recognised by BT as legit

Hey lads n all, I can confirm Bt o traffic shape and throttle. Havine worked for various isps and dealing with provisioning/tech support at a fairly direct level with bt , c&w and ntl (as well as others) BT are pretty shoddy in terms of how they treat their customers jst avoid if you can unless you are willing to pay for 21cn / infinity

Go for be, o2, zen, sky in that order... basically a decent llu provider thatll use as little of bt's equipment and backbone as possible. bear in mind id say jsut go for Be but I dunno how much youre willing to pay (and o2 are cheap as a cheap thing thats cheap) so ... ya know

    avoid
    stalkstalk
    bt
    virgin off cable
    plusnet
    other wank

its been a couple of years since Ive been in the isp busness so this is based on what little Iis still valid now :)

    Went for Be

Also their customer service has been exceptional. Only one round of "press 1 for xyz" and then rang once and straight through to a decent English speaking person on the 2 times I've phoned and they not once treated me like a moron (unlike virgin media).

Also when I had issues to be around for the delivery of the modem, THEY chased up the delivery driver and arranged a time, and they even offered to phone the driver again to ask him to leave it with a neighbour.

Basically I would reccomend them in a heartbeat.

I wanted to go with BE but after going with Tiscali for the TV and how cheap it was they were supplying my phone line and BE wanted too much money to change the line back to BT so I went for the free switch hope I dont regret it its nice and fast but peak times they strangle it like a bald chicken:(
