Generally whenever you're playing pve, its a good idea to know what you're going up against, If you are running into trouble vanquishing a certain area, of getting past a certain mission or quest, you should take notice of what kind of enemies there are, that skills they use and then use that information to your advantage.

If you look on guildwiki or the official wiki, they have pages for every single explorable area or mission area, listing all the enemies and abilities there. So with this information you can then craft a teambuild that has counters for those particular skill combinations!

For example: if you're going against groups of Elementalist mobs that hit REALLY hard by casting spells, its a good idea to bring interrupts, be them in the form of a practiced stance + chocking gas ranger, or a mesmer with cry of frustration, etc...
On the other hand, if you're facing lots of necromancer mobs with lots of hexes and degen, etc, its a good idea to counter those hexes with something like shatter hex, smite hex, etc...

Keep in mind that fights in PvE tend to last very few time, so pressure-related skills like energy denial, degen skills, aren't really very effective...

Another thing that you should know, is that mobs in pve have different armor ratings depending on the kind of damage they receive. For example, undead mobs always take 2x damage from holy damage! So if you're facing undead mobs, its generally a good idea to bring smiting skills!

A good idea when facing big groups of mobs, is to have the team stay in one spot while 1 guy agro's the enemies alone and runs back to the team (pulling). This way, enables the team to use stuff like traps, wards, aoe skills, much more effectively, since when the mobs are coming after the puller, they will be all clumped together...

Finally the last thing you should know about pve, is that minion masters can be excelent! BUT, if the mobs dont drop a usable corpse or if the mobs use smiting skills, you either won't have enough minions or they will be insta-vanished... So, why are minion masters so good? because the way agro works in guildwars1: mobs will focus on the targets with less Armor rating! Also, if you have health regen, mobs will tend to not focus you...
